What Is Sinking Agarwood? Why Is It So Expensive?

What Is Sinking Agarwood?

“Sinking agarwood” is a professional term used in the agarwood industry to describe agarwood with an extremely high oil content — so dense and resin-rich that it sinks completely in water.

In the past, before modern testing equipment existed, traders and collectors often used water to evaluate the quality of agarwood.

The process was simple:

  • Agarwood pieces that floated high on the water contained less resin
  • Pieces that floated just below the surface had higher oil density
  • Pieces that sank completely were considered the highest grade

This traditional method became one of the earliest ways to classify agarwood quality, determine value, and conduct trading.

💎 Why Can Agarwood Sink in Water?

Unlike most hardwood trees, the Aquilaria tree (the tree that produces agarwood) naturally has relatively light and soft wood fibers.

Even large and old Aquilaria trees normally cannot sink in water because the raw wood itself is lighter than water.

Agarwood only becomes heavy enough to sink after:

  • The tree is wounded naturally or artificially
  • Resin begins forming inside the wood
  • The resin accumulates continuously over decades

Over many years, the concentration of natural resin and oil becomes so high that certain sections of the wood become denser than water.

This is why genuine sinking agarwood is extremely rare.

Why Is Sinking Agarwood So Rare?

Finding agarwood with moderate oil content is already difficult.

Finding fully sinking agarwood is many times harder.

In nature:

  • A tree may need 5–7 years to develop basic resin suitable for bracelets
  • 10–20 years may produce higher-grade agarwood with richer aroma
  • But truly sinking-grade agarwood may require 40+ years, or even much longer

The exact time depends on:

  • Climate
  • Soil conditions
  • Tree genetics
  • Resin production ability
  • Size of the infected area

Historically, some massive sinking agarwood formations were believed to develop over 100–200 years.

Today, such natural materials are considered extremely rare treasures.

🌏 Why Sinking Agarwood Is So Valuable

Sinking agarwood represents:

  • Extremely high resin concentration
  • Long natural formation time
  • Exceptional rarity
  • Deep and long-lasting aroma

For many collectors, owning a genuine sinking agarwood bracelet is considered the highest level of agarwood appreciation.

🔥 Modern Sinking Agarwood Is Extremely Difficult to Find

Today, most high-quality sinking agarwood comes from:

  • Old forest materials discovered decades ago
  • Rare remaining wild sources
  • Private long-term collections

Cultivating new trees and waiting for them to naturally develop perfect sinking resin is extremely difficult and time-consuming.

Very few people are willing to wait an entire lifetime for a tree to form true sinking-grade agarwood naturally.
